The Structural Revolution of Knowledge: Openness and Acceleration
Among the many responses, Clifford Lynch, director of the Coalition for Networked Information, offered the most positive assessment. He believes that the most exciting long-term trend is the recoding of human knowledge—from science and technology to more fields, knowledge is being transformed into structured forms that machines can operate on, retrieve, and reason over.
This is not merely digital scanning; it is a deep, slow, and large-scale engineering effort. The interplay of machine learning, natural language processing, and open science practices is accelerating this process. By 2035, such structured knowledge bases will no longer be the exclusive asset of research institutions, but will increasingly become a common good of the public sphere.
Lynch is optimistic about this, with "almost entirely positive" expectations. He also notes that the proliferation of geospatial data capabilities—the so-called "geospatial singularity"—will bring unprecedented transparency. When near-real-time, high-resolution satellite imagery is no longer a monopoly of state power but a routine capability of the commercial sector, government cover-ups of pollution, the truth about wars, and the flows of migration will all be exposed. This is not a threat to privacy, but a check on power.

The Algorithmization of Persuasion: The Last Frontier of Free Will
The same experts, however, voiced far deeper concerns about another trend—concerns far more profound than Lynch's. Judith Donath, a senior researcher at Harvard's Berkman Center, points out that by 2035, AI will develop unprecedented powers of persuasion—not simple recommendation algorithms, but "precision persuasion systems" capable of reshaping people's beliefs and altering behavioral paths.
Donath paints an unsettling scenario: from childhood, a "virtual companion" accompanies each person as they grow. It knows your boundaries, records your emotions, and guides your choices. It does not command; it quietly steers your attention toward what it considers the "right" direction. Memory is outsourced to it, social interaction is mediated by it, and even loneliness is dissolved by it.The foundation of this persuasive power is behavioral data far more granular than today's. Augmented reality systems will record where your gaze lands, and wearable devices will sense your heart rate and anxiety. When algorithms know when you are vulnerable, when you desire, and when you fear, persuasion is no longer communication but one-way manipulation.
Donath reminds us that persuasion itself is not evil—it can be used to promote medication adherence, safe driving, and even to persuade people to consume less to save the climate. But the problem is that profit-driven or power-driven systems are more likely to use this capability to create dissatisfaction, deepen division, and convert anxiety into votes or consumption. By then, "free will" will no longer be a philosophical concept but an infrastructure in urgent need of protection.
The Toxification of Public Space and the Burden of Democracy
Mark Davis, associate professor of communications at the University of Melbourne in Australia, shifts the perspective to a broader political level. He states bluntly: if the status quo does not change, digital media will mean the end of democracy.
The structure, scale, and speed of digital media have exceeded the limits that deliberative democracy can bear. Carefully designed inflammatory content, emotional communication, and information cocoons have turned the online public space from a place of rational discussion into an "infinite swamp of toxic speech" (in Lynch's words). Davis particularly notes that both the liberal ideology of Western tech companies and the strict control of the internet by non-democratic countries such as China are weakening the democratic potential of public discourse in different ways.
Lynch has also noticed this. He regards social media as a "cesspool without bottom lines" and calls for dividing social media into two distinct domains: one is a private communication tool for staying in touch with known friends—which helps alleviate isolation; the other is a public-facing information distribution space—the latter requiring stricter rules.
These views point to a common core contradiction: the information distribution systems built by technology companies are essentially designed to maximize engagement rather than truthfulness. Under such logic, extreme, divisive, and false content will always spread faster than facts and reason.

Looking toward 2035, the picture painted by experts is not monolithic. Open science enabled by knowledge coding, geospatial transparency, and personalized health monitoring all hold enormous positive potential. But the rise of algorithmic persuasion, the toxification of social media, and the possibility of digital authoritarianism constitute an almost equally powerful negative force.
The divergence between the two depends on a factor that has not yet arrived: governance. Davis believes a new wave of regulation is inevitable. The question is not whether regulation is needed, but how to re-establish boundaries for digital public space without destroying public communication.This is precisely the long-term challenge facing the global governance system. On a digital planet dominated by multinational tech companies, regulation by any single nation can hardly counter the cross-border flow of algorithms. Whether 2035 can become a turning point for digital civilization depends not only on the technology itself, but also on whether humanity can strike a new balance among freedom, security, and trust.
The "greater concerns" expressed by the experts in the Pew survey are not so much technological pessimism as a sober warning: we are heading toward an era orchestrated by algorithms, and humanity is not yet ready to coexist with this new form of "persuasiveness."
The next decade is not just the next stage of technological evolution, but also a window period in which global governance, social structures, and individual autonomy are reassessed. The choices made now will define whether 2035 becomes a digital utopia or a digital dystopia.
